After a call by a former Supreme Court Justice to slice the right to keep and bear arms from the Constitution, President Trump reached for the caps key.
“THE SECOND AMENDMENT WILL NEVER BE REPEALED! As much as Democrats would like to see this happen, and despite the words yesterday of former Supreme Court Justice Stevens, NO WAY,” Trump tweeted in the predawn hours Wednesday. “We need more Republicans in 2018 and must ALWAYS hold the Supreme Court!”
The social media post, liked over 163,000 times, came as counterfire to a New York Times op-ed from retired Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens arguing that the Constitutional amendment concerning gun rights be repealed.
Pro-Second Amendment groups were quick to scoff at the unlikely notion but they were not alone.
Follow-up op-eds published everywhere from the Washington Post to the Dallas Morning News and CNN disagreed with the retired jurist, going on to describe Stevens’ suggestion as “supremely unhelpful” to “irresponsible” and just a “terrible idea.”
As for Trump, the nation’s top executive has tweeted of the amendment and the courts before, saying “The 2nd Amendment is under siege. We need SCOTUS judges who will uphold the US Constitution,” on the cusp of his election win in 2016.
